I am going back to school! A lot of people have been asking me about the course I have chosen, and what school was exciting enough to warrant a trip half way around the world.
The place is the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, and I’ll be taking their Post-Bac Certificate (a one-year post-grad course). It is totally hands-on, so I will be in the studio dawn until dusk, painting and drawing. I’ll be happy to get into a bit of essay writing again, but the big thing for me is learning and practicing the craft.
I’m looking for my own style, along with more ease and confidence in executing it. I’ve never done this full-time, so I’m excited to see what emerges with a bigger time and energy commitment than I’ve had for my art practice up to now.
I wasn’t certain I would get a place here, not being sure where to situate myself as a mature student with lots of “hobby” art work but no formal experience. It was a risk to apply, to submit my portfolio and write the essays. I had nothing to lose but my pride, and yet it still felt like a big step. It turns out I made the right decision, I was offered a place along with a scholarship towards my tuition fees. Good thing too, as the tuition figures for study in the states are not for the faint hearted!
